Florence University of the Arts
Florence University of the Arts (FUA) provided me with a transformative study abroad experience through its immersive learning approach and its deep connection to the heart of Florence. Linked with my home university, FUA offers a U.S.-style education that seamlessly integrates academic learning with hands-on exposure to Italian culture and history. During my six-week program, I focused on studying the cultural impact and international dynamics of the mafia. The courses, taught by experienced faculty in English, made the learning environment highly engaging and accessible while highlighting the rich history and unique societal aspects of Italy. The school’s central location in Florence allowed me to experience the city intimately, giving a genuine glimpse into both historic and modern Italian life.
Beyond the classroom, my weekends were an opportunity to expand my learning and travel to iconic Italian and European destinations. I explored the scenic landscapes of Cinque Terre, the renowned wineries of Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast, Rome, and concluded my journey in Monaco. Each destination offered unique cultural insights, from the rural beauty and artisanal traditions of Tuscany to the luxurious ambiance of Monaco. This travel experience enriched my understanding of the diverse cultures within Italy and neighboring regions, providing firsthand knowledge of how different communities thrive—from Florence’s working-class neighborhoods to the high-end scenes along the French Riviera.
My time in Europe had a lasting impact on my worldview. Experiencing both the economic diversity within Italy and the social nuances across various regions opened my eyes to perspectives far removed from those I grew up with in the U.S. I observed a strong sense of cultural preservation and community within each place I visited, which contrasted with the individualistic nature often seen in American society. The opportunity to learn in such varied environments allowed me to connect theory with lived experience, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and a broadened perspective on international communities.
